LGT Capital Partners-advised entities support Barbri’s future growth with minority investment

9 January 2025

Entities advised by LGT Capital Partners have acquired a minority stake in the tech-enabled legal education provider Barbri to support its future growth initiatives. LGT Capital Partners led the transaction and is entering into a new partnership with existing majority owner Francisco Partners.

Founded in 1967 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, US, Barbri is one of the leading providers of tech-enabled legal learning solutions for law students, professionals, law schools, universities, law firms and other organizations. The company’s mission is to empower every step of the legal learning journey.

LGT Capital Partners has partnered with Francisco Partners, which has held a majority stake in the company since 2021, through a minority recapitalization. Under Francisco Partners ownership, Barbri has evolved from a test-preparation-focused company to a technology-enabled platform provider of learning solutions across the full spectrum of needs for aspiring lawyers to experienced legal professionals. LGT Capital Partners’ investment will support the continued investment into Barbri’s professional learning offerings as well as its European expansion initiatives.

Andreas Hellmann, Partner at LGT Capital Partners, said: “After following the development and transformation of Barbri in recent years, we are pleased to partner with its management team and Francisco Partners to support this value creation journey. The company combines trusted content, innovative technology and data-driven solutions and is well positioned to further strengthen its distinctive position in lifetime legal education.”

LGT Capital Partners has been active as a global direct minority investor since 2010. The investment in Barbri is closely aligned with the firm’s focus on being a leading global provider of capital solutions for private equity fund managers and their portfolio companies. LGT Capital Partners regularly partners with private equity sponsors by acquiring minority stakes in some of their best performing companies to support their capital needs and to facilitate longer-term value creation.
