Doug Coulter on resilient PE strategies in Asia: insights from PEI’s Asia Roundtable

At Private Equity International’s recent Asia Roundtable, Doug Coulter, Partner at LGT Capital Partners, joined other industry experts to discuss how private equity investors are navigating evolving dynamics across the region.

Volatility and geopolitical uncertainty continue to pose challenges for global investors allocating capital to Asia. However, the fundamentals of private equity remain unchanged, with long-term investors successfully navigating these cycles by focusing on quality assets and experienced managers. As Doug Coulter observed: “There is always something to worry about.” This is why following steady, disciplined investment approaches remains key.

He also highlighted the growing imbalance in capital allocation, noting that large pan-regional funds continue to attract a significant share of commitments but account for only a small portion of deal activity. “Only around 2% of deals in Asia involve large-cap transactions,” he commented, underscoring the risk of overlooking broader opportunities.

With signs of recovery in Hong Kong and ongoing momentum in India, Coulter expects 2025 and 2026 to be strong vintage years for the region. The roundtable underscored a shift towards more selective capital deployment and a renewed focus on long-term fundamentals across Asia-Pacific.
