Doug Coulter participates in Private Equity International’s (PEI) Asia Roundtable 2023

4 September 2023

Shifting appetites for Chinese private equity are helping to reshape the look and feel of private markets in Asia Pacific (APAC), writes PEI as an introduction to its Asia Roundtable 2023. Experts including Doug Coulter, Partner at LGT Capital Partners, shared their insights.

APAC funds closed with USD 16 billion in the first half of 2023, around one third of the USD 44 billion collected by European funds and less than half of the USD 37 billion raised by APAC funds in the first half of 2022, according to PEI data. Only 57 APAC funds reached a final close in the first half of last year, putting 2023 on track to finish well below the 266 closed in 2022, according to the media.

Doug explains: “In the mid to late 2010s, Asia was approaching 25% to 30% of global private equity. However, the investment landscape has changed substantially, not least because of higher interest rates in the US, or the occurrence of economic factors like the denominator effect.” He points out, however, that APAC is still a very interesting region, not least because of countries such as Australia or India.
