Brooke Zhou discusses China's private equity opportunity with the Wall Street Journal
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Brooke Zhou, Partner at LGT Capital Partners, outlined the firm's approach to investing in China and explained why a less crowded market creates compelling opportunities for disciplined investors.
According to Brooke, China is very much a buyer's market, where limited competition allows LGT Capital Partners to negotiate attractive valuations and favorable terms. She characterizes the firm's philosophy as “cautiously contrarian” – identifying opportunities in areas that others have overlooked and using LGT Capital Partners’ extensive network of General Partners as a key source of differentiated insight.
She explains that LGT Capital Partners has continued to deploy capital in China throughout market downturns, concentrating on the small to middle market segment. During periods of weak sentiment, the firm has been able to acquire high-quality assets at valuations it considers attractive, with little to no competition.
Looking ahead, Brooke views the secondary market as the major growth driver for Asian private equity. She also observes that investor sentiment towards China has begun to improve, a shift she attributes in part to the emergence of competitive Chinese AI models in 2025, which demonstrated that the country continues to deliver meaningful innovation.
