Rudolf von Alt described his impressions of his first journey to Italy, which he undertook together with his father, as follows: "... In the year 1833 I saw the Italian cities of Verona, Vicenza, Padua and Venice for the first time - I am unable to describe the impression they made on me, especially the latter - I felt as though I had to soak up all its romance." Alt succeeds in conveying the romantic atmosphere he experienced in this painting, which depicts the view along the façade of the Doge's Palace towards Santa Maria della Salute. 

With their extensive groves and large-scale formal flower beds, the gardens perfectly reflected the horticultural style of the time. Designed and executed by Jean Trehet, they represented an ornamental interplay between interior and exterior space.  

The everlasting or perpetual calendar of the Princely Collections belongs to the earliest examples of a type of instrument that was developed after the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Synoptic instruments were developed to facilitate the reciprocal conversion of both calendar systems, with the help of which the important dates of the coming years could also be determined. Executed with great clarity, the calendar of this versatile example by Erasmus Habermel consists of an octagonal, gilded copper plate, on both sides of which concentric circles are engraved. Arranged on the front side are a repeatedly subdivided, rotating disk and two hands of different lengths, which are used for ecclesiastical and astrological calendar calculations. The rear side exhibits a total of four tabulated areas containing a wealth of information on the solar and lunar eclipses, date indications for Easter and Advent according to the Gregorian and Julian calendars, and basic calendar indications for the secular years until the year 4400.
